Design and Applications of a Data-Based Auralization System for Surround Sound

A headphone-based auralization system which relies on real-measured data for the acoustic display of surround sound control rooms has been developed. It includes the dynamic convolution of stored binaural room impulse responses, controlled by a head tracker. The contribution reports on basic design aspects of the system. In particular, the relative importance and parametrization of individual HRTF features for the control of the elevation of frontal sound sources, which has been reconsidered under dynamic conditions. A number of applications is suggested, for example the virtual surround listening room, or a new tool for basic research.
