Recent Advances in Optical Recording for Consumer Applications

New technology developments are taking place at three levels in the field of optical recording: 1) CD level, 650 MB, high-speed CD-R and CD-RW; 2) DVD level, 4.7 GB, rewritable, full-capacity DVD; and 3) -blue- level, 20 to 30 GB at data rates of 30 to 50 Mb/s. This paper describes some of the underlying technologies.
