This paper describes work at BT Labs to develop a multi-modal perceptual model. The technological background and the emerging business needs that are stimulating this development are discussed. In particular, growth in multi-media products and services requires that auditory and visual models be extended to take account of the interaction between modalities. Progress toward a multi-modal model is reviewed.
