The evaluation of an evolving loudspeaker design relies upon a combination of various parameter measurements and a significant element of subjective assessment. The measuring techniques in common use are all reasonably well understood, although their correlation with the audible effects are often less clear cut. Subjective techniques have the disadvantage of variable results of different perceivers, hence the continuing search for objective techniques which can be correlated directly to audible effects. This paper describes the background to the experimental use of codex systems and their various data rates as one possible objective measure of the resolution of a loudspeaker system.
