MIDAS-MILAN: An Open Distributed Processing System for Audio Signal Processing

Document Thumbnail

A multiprocessor system is described which is suitable for the signal processing function associated with audio engineering applications, including the real-time synthesis of electroacoustic music. These applications can be developed on one machine, using a prototyping environment based on portable C functions, and subsequently may be distributed across the multiprocessor network for increased performance. The prototyping environment, which is available within the public domain, can be used to incorporate electroacoustic processing within a user's general C program. It is a heterogeneous system-nodes within the multiprocessor network communicate by means of standardized protocols described within the paper, and need not be of the same processor type. Examples of applications of the system within the audio engineering field are given.
