Hybrid Sampling-Wavetable Synthesis with Genetic Algorithms (P)

Document Thumbnail

A hybrid sampling and wavetable synthesis method is introduced for matching acoustic instruments using genetic algorithm optimization. The method uses sampling for the critical attack portion of the tone and wavetable synthesis to match the more gradually changing sustain and decay. To perform a smooth transition between them, a hybrid sampling-wavetable crossfade is used. Various tones from the piano, harp, glockenspiel, and temple block were matched. Listening tests have found the matches indistinguishable from the original tones.
