Visual Monitoring of Multichannel Stereophonic Signals
In 3/1 or 3/2 format multichannel audio signals, the center and the surround audio signals play an important role in achieving good sound localization and spaciousness. The center and surround sound effects, however, cannot be displayed on conventional Lissajous monitors for two-channel stereophony. A new type of monitor scope for visual monitoring of multichannel audio signals is presented to serve as a visual aid for production staff to replace the conventional Lissajous monitors. The monitor displays directional balance and phase relationships among the signals by visualizing an instantaneous sound intensity vector synthesized by the multichannel audio signals.
