Tonality Detection in Perceptual Coding of Audio

Perceptual audio coding is a technological approach to the problem of audio compression that essentially takes advantage of models of the human auditory system, known as psychoacoustical models. The quality and efficiency of the encoding process depends on the accuracy of these models and on the nature of the audio signal, in particular its tonality attributes. This paper highlights the relevance of an accurate signal tonality classification algorithm, reviews a few commonly used solutions for this purpose, and suggests a new algorithm that is adapted to the TDAC filter bank.
