A Music Synthesizer Architecture that Integrates a Specialized DSP Core and a 16-Bit Microprocessor on a Single Chip

Document Thumbnail

This paper describes an integrated-circuit architecture for music synthesis applications. This architecture combines a specialized high-performance RISC-based digital signal processor and a 16-bit CISC-based microprocessor on a single chip. A unique memory management approach allows the DSP and the microprocessor to share the same external memory. A 56-voice synthesizer with effects processing can be implemented using this chip with one external DRAM and a DAC.
