Professional audio gain-control applications for gating, compression, limiting, and downward expansion have been developed using a high-performance digitally controlled audio attenuator IC. This device typically features a 120-dB SNR and 0.0008% THD and can switch attenuation levels without zipper noise, clicks, or pops. Circuit design examples, performance characteristics, and alternative topologies are discussed.
