With recent real-time FIR filter algorithms, it is possible to convolve source signals with very long arbitrary impulse responses (~100000 taps) and arbitrary short initial delay times on DSPs. Consequently, it is no longer necessary to approximate long FIR filter responses with IIR filter technology to achieve short delay times. The significant impact of this new technique on adaptive, variable electroacoustic reverberation systems in halls is discussed.
