Absolute Memory for Musical Tempo

Document Thumbnail

Forty-four subjects sang popular songs from memory, and their tempos were compared to recorded versions of the songs. Forty-three percent of the subjects came within ±6% of the proper tempo. This is within the JND for tempo as established by Drake and Botte (Perception & Psychophysics, 1993) and provides evidence for absolute tempo.
