Intra-Channel Prediction: A New Tool for the Subband Coding of High-Quality Audio

A forward adaptive linear predictor, optimized for harmonic sounds, is applied to the MPEG-2 Layer II coding system to reduce the intrachannel correlation in the presence of musical items. The performance gain of the system is shown on some critical materials, both in terms of coding gain and subjective quality. Then, the advantages and disadvantages of this technique are discussed.
