When different individuals listen to different sound programs in a single room, each person wants to hear his program with a minimum of distraction from the other programs. To achieve this, three methods have been used: low frequencies-active sound (or noise) control; midfrequencies-beam focusing using a loudspeaker array; and high frequencies-directional loudspeaker and passive absorption. Experiments have been done in anechoic, reverberation, and listening rooms.
