What's Really New in Loudspeakers?

One might be tempted to assume that time brings progress to every area of engineering, including loudspeakers. However, progress is most often slow and incremental in disciplines requiring mostly empirical testing to find improvement. The majority of improvements in loudspeakers are due to materials science with very little contribution from acoustics or physics and is, as always, mostly market driven.
