Cascadable Lossy Data Compression Using a Lossless Kernel

Document Thumbnail

Lossy data reduction through use of a suitable lossless coding system is proposed. The authors precede the lossless encoder by an adaptive noise-shaped quantizer which takes advantage of the auditory masking curve and reduces the wordlength prior to coding. If the decoded signal is encoded a second time, the resulting bit stream is exactly the same as the first encoding, thus avoiding the build-up of coding error when systems are cascaded.
