This paper proposes a new expression for the directivity factor of an array which shows an explicit relation with the geometrical arrangement of the sensors. Optimum sensor placement configurations are then provided for arrays with a low number of sensors. A design principle for arrays with a higher number of sensors is proposed. It yields hexagonal structures which provide better performance than rectangular configurations.
