With the emergence of new release formats capable of delivering discrete 5 or 6 (5.1) multichannel surround sound, there is a need to research unique recording methods to take advantage of the enhanced spatiality over conventional 2-channel stereophonic systems. Investigations as such have led to a microphone technique incorporating head-related cues through use of binaural artificial head microphone signals sent to the surround channels. Combining this with three spaced directional microphones for the front channels show promising results towards reproducing a 3-dimensional soundfield.
