Studio quality multi-channel digital audio, MIDI, and synchronization control signals can be transported over long distances using the public-domain interface, Presto. Low cost and high performance are realized using well-understood methods and commodity parts. Presto uses ATM transceivers to transmit via twisted pair copper cable over distance up to 100 meters and laser diodes to transmit via single-mode fiber-optic cable over distances of 10 kilometers or greater. High bandwidth, full-duplex operation is achieved over extended distances using multiple conductors. :Large reductions in interface delay and jitter are realized using synchronous transmission and other simple techniques. Presto also allows very large networks to be assembled using hubs and routers.
