Two closely spaced loudspeakers can create very convincing virtual images for a single listener provided their inputs are carefully matched to be almost equal and opposite. For a virtual image position well outside the angle spanned by the loudspeakers, the two inputs must be substantially out of phase regardless of how the listener's head is modeled.
