Downloadable Sounds Level 1 Specification

Document Thumbnail

The Downloadable Sounds specification (DLS) defines a base-line architecture and file format which supports the playback of "downloadable" sounds on a wavetable synthesizer. DLS extends PC sound cards and other synthesis engines by providing a means for composers to use their own sounds rather than relying on the fixed General MIDI sound set. This paper presents an overview of DLS Level 1, with a focus on the device architecture capabilities, creating DLS files, and industry-wide implementation plans. The paper also discusses the history of DLS and current plans for developing a Level 2 specification with significantly enhanced capabilities.
