This paper deals with the issues which should be considered when introducing DAB into an existing broadcast operation. A conceptual model of a DAB network is introduced and the differences to a conventional FM network are highlighted. The various sections of the DAB network are then considered and the practical problems associated with adding these to an existing operation are discussed. The topics covered include audio processing and coding, the multiplexing of audio and data sources, signal distribution and transmitter implementation.
