Some Notes on Problems Encountered in the Use of the Standard Reference Tape
This paper discusses serious errors resulting from the use of a reference tape as the basis for a magnetic tape performance standard (Interim Federal Specification W-T-61a, Navy Ships). The accuracy of the method is seriously affected by physical changes in the reference tape, and the relative performance of two similar tapes depends significantly on the model of machine used for the test. Precautions for minimizing damage to reference tapes are described.
