Psychoacoustically Optimal Noise Shaping

Document Thumbnail

The design of psychoacoustically optimal noise-shaping filters for requantization in nonoversampling digital audio applications is examined. : The object is to minimize the total perceived output noise power. For this purpose, a new perceptual frequency-weighting function is introduced which provides closer matching to the ear's measured sensitivity at high frequencies than do existing functions. Corresponding filter designs are investigated. In addition, the importance of digital-to-analog-converter linearity is discussed with regard to realizing the potential audible benefits of noise shaping.
