The traditional practice for testing ;and aligning the asimuth angle of a playback head is to observe the output level or the phase correlation. For this purpose it is necessary during playback of the "azimuth" section of a calibration tape to misalign and subsequently realign the head azimuth to find the maximum output level or best possble phase correlation. This new method provides the possibilities of either judging the correct alignment without any misalignment or readjusting alignment if necessary.
