The car is a particularly harsh environment for distributed audio systems. The high levels of EM radiation interfere with analog signals and limited space restricts cabling of control information. This paper presents a local area network architecture and an associated integrated circuit that use plastic optical fiber to communicate digital audio data and control information. Data is encoded according to the Sony Philips Digital Interface Format (SPDIF) with messages communicated in the user channel.
