AUDIMIR: Directional Hearing at Microgravity

In October 1991, the first Austrian Cosmonaut spent one week in the Soviet space station MIR. One of the Austrian experiments carried out was AUDIMIR, a psychoacoustic technology project. AUDIMIR is designed to investigate the accuracy of directional hearing and the role of directional hearing as part of the human orientation system at microgravity. The experiment was realized using digital audio processing to provide binaural signals via headphones. The experiment, its hardware and software will be described, and first results presented.
