Applying joint stereo coding techniques for the low bit-rate coding of audio signals can lead to significant improvement in the perceived sound quality. Nevertheless, some pitfalls for the use of these techniques should be taken into account in order to avoid coding artefacts. The combined (MS/Intensity) joint stereo coding techniques implemented in Layer III of the ISO/MPEG/AUDIO coder will be described.
