A software simulator for the analysis of sub-band filter-banks has been implemented. The simulator processes the filters in a parallel fashion and uses bandpass finite impulse response filters. This simplifies the design process and reduces the computational complexities involved with most of the current filter-bank schemes. The paper will discuss the theoretical psychoacoustical foundations specifically applied to critical bandwidth and current research in loudness thresholds. The filter-bank simulator is a multichannel system that implements the critical bands and is able to process stereo 16-bit linear PCM audio and output the data for testing or perceptual evaluations.
