Modular, MIDI-Controlled Audio Performance Mixing System
This paper describes the use of new technology in creating a low-cost, portable audio mixing system that is completely controlled via computer. Configured as a two-space rack, this system is a fully modular, high-performance, MIDI-based mixer which brings low-cost mixing to a broad range of applications. Applications range from traditional studio mix-down with precise repeatability to avant garde performance audio that incorporates real-time input from performers and technicians. A new technique of reassigning controllers to mixer elements under sequencer control makes it possible to produce constantly evolving interactive performances, which incorporate lighting, sound synthesis, machine control, and audio.
