Study on Optimum Rear Loudspeaker Height for 3-1 Reproduction of HDTV Audio

The HDTV Multichannel Sound Study Group, sponsored by the Hoso Bunka Foundation, has organized approximately 30 members since 1991. To obtain a practical guideline at the multichannel sound production stage is the group's final goal. This paper describes current activity, including the results of study of the optimum height of rear surround loudspeakers for the best perception of rear sound with the 3-1 audio system of HDTV. Psychoacoustic experiments have shown that many listeners prefer loudspeaker positions which are at or above ear height.
