AC-3 Operation, Bitstream Syntax, and Features

Document Thumbnail

The AC-3 bitstream syntax is a protocol which provides the logical connection between encoder and decoder employing Dolby's AC-3 audio datarate compression technology. This paper discusses the operation of AC-3 coding in the context of the bitstream syntax. Connections are drawn between coder functional blocks and their associated entries in the bitstream. Implications of syntax options on encoder flexibility are described, along with additional features supported by the protocol.
