Extending the Dynamic Range of Magnetic Recorders

The dynamic recording range of magnetic recorders is limited primarily by tape characteristics - saturation and tape noise. By using multi-track recording with staggered levels and an automatic selector, additional range of about 15 db can be achieved in a typical system with no sacrifice in the audible quality.
