Just as the bandpass, basic noise background, dynamic range, and channel capacity of a communication system can be described, the performance of the ear itself can be related to measured parameters. These parameters can be extracted from acoustic data on speech and hearing. They offer insight as to how external interference and hearing impairments affect the channel capacity available to a listener.
