Speech Intelligibility in Some German Sports Stadiums

Document Thumbnail

The Landesministerium für Umwelt, Raumordnung und Landwirtschaft of the state of Nordrhein-Westfalen has commissioned a study on optimizing speech intelligibility and reducing noise pollution caused by sound systems in sports stadiums. A detailed analysis of eight facilities, involving time-delay spectrometry and subjective ALcons tests, shows that sound system performance is generally poor when compared with the maximum attainable speech intelligibility under given circumstances, that is, acoustics and crowd noise. Possibilities for improvement are outlined.
