Previous publications of the author dealt with the steady-state low-frequency performance of listening rooms. The present engineering report presents typical responses of rectangular rooms to transient low-frequency excitation. Consequences of fequency- and time-domain windowing are shown when nonstationary signal response is computed using the fast Fourier transform. Listening tests using music and computer-simulated room responses are discussed. In the music tests, several loudspeaker configurations are compared using conventional and near-field subwoofers.
