Digital processing of audio signals can give rise to undesirable effects and artifacts if the enforced sampled and quantized nature of both audio signals and control parameters is not fully grasped. Zipper noise and limit cycle oscillation are well known artifacts, and a plethora of effects arise from unsuitable filter structures, processing inaccuracies, and the way in which control changes are implemented. As digital audio heads for the 1990s, this paper outlines these and new problem areas and identifies possible solutions. In addition, a test bed is described which has been developed to evaluate digital audio concepts. Using audio material this demonstrates the areas outlined before and after the problems have been solved.
