Sir Basil Spence's new cathedral rose from the ashes of wartorn Britain during the 1950s and was consecrated in 1961. The original Pamphonic speech reinforcement system-although technically advanced at the time-proved unworkable and was immediately replaced by Hugh Britain's famous cruciform cluster. 30 years later the technology of the 80s has enabled many of Paul Taylor's original concepts to be realised and expanded upon. This paper will present the exploratory work and describe the new system.
