The purpose of the acoustical measurement should dictate requirements, from the microphone to the meter to the metric used. We discuss measuring microphones, types and accuracies of sound level meters, differences between analyzers, filters, and FFTs, some metrics used, (including the A- and C-weightings, Leq, Ln, and Lmax), and measurement standards with the spatial and temporal requirements.
