A prototype digital audio recorder/player using an 89 mm (3.5 inch) magneto-optical disk as the storage medium has been developed. The disk is housed in a cartridge with a protective shutter and is similar in appearance to a 3.5 inch floppy disk. Approximately 20 minutes of record/play time can be obtained by using a Constant Linear Velocity (CLV) recording method. The data format used for recording is the same as an audio CD. Also described in this paper will be the principles of magneto-optical recording, the basic technologies employed, and future considerations and applications.
