The Use of MS Techniques and MS Signals in Swedish Television

Document Thumbnail

Five years ago the Swedish Television Company adopted the MS technique as a practical standard for recording in stereo with coincident microphones. The paper discusses the way MS signals are used in recording, mixing, monitoring, and editing within the Swedish Television Company. The operational advantages of the technique and problems of implementing the MS method within a large organization which functions also in mono are outlined. Special hardware was built in order to make it possible for the operators to handle the unmatrixed MS signals directly. Recent results of training a group of film editors and VHS pre-editors indicate that they can handle stereo signals and take advantage of the flexibility MS signals offer in monitoring.
