Digital Dynamic Range Compressor for Audio

Document Thumbnail

The presented compressor is intended to match the dynamic range of a recording to a listening situation, in which the acceptable dynamic range is determined by background noise and annoyance. Hence the effect of the compressor must be clearly audible (the compression) while artifacts and distortion are minimized. Digital audio processing leads to a nonconventional design including feed-forward control. Attack time, release time, and static behavior can be set independently, spectral purity is excellent, and artifacts are minimal. A dynamic range reduction of 20 dB can easily be obtained.
