A technique has been developed whereby two voice-grade telephone lines can be used to send and receive broadcast-quality audio. The technique involves five-band compression, shifting the frequency bands of the program during transmission to occupy two 3-kHz-bandwidth phone lines, then "unshifting" the received phone-line signals, and finally dynamic range expansion to exactly mirror the compression used during transmission. The resulting product has been successfully employed receivly by several networks and broadcasters. The development of the technique and its application are described.
