Accurate loudspeaker sound reproduction in a semi-reverberant environment requires a higher degree of loudspeaker directivity than exhibited by most loudspeakers. Loudspeaker directivity decreases the adverse audible effects introduced by the listening room boundaries. Contrary to common belief conventional speaker deficiencies (distortion phenomena, delayed resonances etc.) are not responsible for the most obvious colourations present in respected contemporary loudspeakers. The colourations result from significant errors in the time dependent frequency response perceived by the listener. Different ways of designing symmetric directional loudspeakers are presented. Some designs utilize present day dynamic drivers but future possibilities are also discussed.
