While general purpose digital signal processors can be of great value in the digital audio studio, many applications require specialized architectures if more than modest performance is desired. By examining two such applications, sampling synthesis and mixing/equalization, a justification for this specialization is provided. A system architecture is proposed which can support both general purpose and specialized processors in a multiprocessing environment.
