The Design of High-Performance Voltage-Controlled Equalizers

The operational voltage controlled element (OVCE) has been shown to directly implement a high performance reciprocal equalizer when used in VCP mode. In addition to this reported "driven tap" VCP, the OVCE may be configured as an "active tap" VCP circuit, which allows its insertion into virtually any circuit function controlled by a potentiometer. This paper discusses these ideas and related design issues, and reports on a 3-band equalizer with .01% distortion at 96 dB s/n ratio and 16 dB headroom.
