Improved Speech Intelligibility by Use of Time Delays in Sound Systems

Document Thumbnail

The influence of sound reflections of various pressure levels and time delays on speech intelligibility is combined for PA systems. Comparing the most common principles of calculation and measurements, the RASTI method proves to be a good tool for the consultant planning PA systems. Calculations and examples of existing systems show that the use of delay units for speakers placed at the rear of the auditorium can increase speech intelligibility. Mistakes can be avoided already in the design phase of a PA system if the sound wave propagation and the calculation of speech intelligibility are taken into consideration.
