The high dynamic range and linearity ultimately required, 20+ bits, in high performance audio frequency analog to digital conversion cannot be achieved economically using conventional architectures such as successive approximation or residue approaches. Oversampling techniques provide a possible solution. However a number of theoretical and practical problems need to be resolved. These are discussed with emphasis on the oversampling approach and include: high linearity of the digital to analog converter; relationship between transfer characteristics and errors introduced; and characteristics of the decimating or anti-aliasing filter.
