Musical Sound Synthesis by Finite Differences Method: PC-Implementation and New Developments

Document Thumbnail

The equation of vibration for a viscoelastic string coupled with a resonance box is solved by numerical methods. Several mechanical quantities such as displacement, force, and velocity at the bridge are investigated. The solutions are used to synthesize musical sounds by taking further nonlinearities and coupling between several strings into account in order to improve the quality of the sounds produced. The synthesis program, written in PASCAL on a PC/AT computer, is an efficient tool for interactive physical and psychoacoustical research.
