What is a Computer Music Workstation?

Document Thumbnail

Music may be viewed as a collection of tasks, many of which may be executed by a human being, a properly programmed computer, or some cooperative combination of both. There are therefore many possible types of computer music workstation, each of which addresses some subset of these musical tasks. This paper characterizes these musical tasks in terms of relevant computational requirements and restrictions. These characterizations make it possible to describe a classification system for current and foreseeable computer music workstations.
